Salient Experiences in Student Development: Impact of an Undergraduate STEM Teacher Preparation Program

The need for a comprehensive, high-quality pipeline the development of undergraduate pre-service teachers, especially those that represent diverse student body, within STEM disciplines is acute. Here, we studied NoyceSCIENCE program to determine most impactful experiences offered undergraduates through lens theory. We used qualitative coding analyze data collected from journals ( n = 29) written by students varying backgrounds, and at levels (i.e., Scholar Intern level) over 3-year running period. observed faculty mentorship, ability mentor others, volunteer experiences, learning directly experts had greatest influence on overall. For Scholars participate more than 1 year in program, access mentoring volunteering contributed development. posit these findings are broadly applicable other science communities content-focused teacher preparation programs as they components can be integrated isolation or their entirety.
